Buying from local businesses is something that I have been passionate about for quite a while. As a small business owner, I understand how difficult it us for to keep operating and that unfortunately many of us are hanging on by a thread. Big businesses don’t care about your purchases and they don’t do a happy dance for every order they receive. Let’s not make billionaires richer this Christmas.
I have put the following list together of businesses that I recommend. I am placing a focus on crafters, makers and services who are doing good in the world through sustainability, human rights and animal rights.

Handmade Crafts and Art
Sweet Lavender and Chili Flakes
Operating from Dublin, Stef from Sweet Lavender and Chili Flakes encourages a move away from disposable items with a range of period products, cleansing wipes, scrunchies, hairbands and sustainable underwear. There are themed subscription boxes full of beautifully hand-crafted re-usables. I’m a bit obsessed with Stef to be honest. Stef is also creating a collection in aid of Palestine.

The Little Síopa
Creating gorgeous handmade goods from Galway, Aideen, queen of knitting, makes delightful gifts and treats. I purchased two puimcíní a few years ago and they still look amazing. They are a must for spooky season. Aideen also sells beautiful decorations (which I have also purchased) from Imani Collective, an ethical organisation making artisan pieces in Kenya, providing jobs and sourcing local raw and organic materials.
Pumpkin Lodge Crafts
Shameless plug for myself here.
I started Pumpkin Lodge Crafts because I’m passionate about slow fashion and animals; I wanted to create handmade pieces that didn’t contribute to animal harm while at the same time supporting wonderful causes (Gaza Go Bragh, Navan Pride, Seal Rescue Ireland, The Donkey Sanctuary, NARA, My Lovely Horse /Pig Rescue). My designs are based on traditional Irish shawls and clothing, folklore, myths and the Irish countryside. Pumpkin Lodge Crafts is a vegan owned and operated business. I am selling bookmarks and decorations for Gaza Go Bragh this Christmas.

The last few years have been particularly hard for charities so please consider supporting some of Ireland’s fantastic organisations.
I’m sure I’ve left out loads of businesses so I will keep updating the list. I firmly believe that we should all be purchasing from local businesses this year, particularly small ones. Please let me know of any great local small, eco-friendly, vegan, sustainable businesses to feature and indeed support.
